These capsules are for people with severe persistent heartburn when taking an H2- antagonist to reduce acid production. They are usually taken for a long period of time before symptoms improve.

Reflux is the backflow of acid from the stomach into the gullet (“foodpipe”) which may become inflamed and painful. This may cause you symptoms such as a painful sensation in the chest rising up to your throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).

Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the tablets for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.

AstraZeneca's new's' drug, Nexium, is the latest innovation being hailed by investors as a major step toward reshaping the way health insurance plans work. The drug is now the only prescription-based drug for heartburn and acid reflux that patients pay with insurance and without them. Nexium, which combines the active ingredient esomeprazole magnesium with the prescription drug rabeprazole, treats a type of acid-related condition called gastroesophageal reflux disease. Patients pay for the medication through co-pay or coupon programs, but AstraZeneca says it has not yet approved Nexium or its generic equivalent, Prilosec.

But some investors have pointed out that Nexium is not the only choice for heartburn and acid reflux. Other drugs, such as Prilosec, are also available, but AstraZeneca says that these have not yet been approved by the FDA. AstraZeneca expects Nexium to be the first drug to be approved for those conditions, including heartburn. But the drug is not yet widely available.
